Thank you for your interest in applying for a charter school. Information for submitting an application is set forth hereafter.
An easy-to-read timeline for use when preparing to submit a charter school proposal is detailed below. *Please note: ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY August 3rd OF EACH CALENDAR YEAR FOR CHARTER SCHOOLS TO BE OPENED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT'S NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.
The Technical Assistance Workshop (pdf) is a requirement for anyone interested in submitting an application this year.
Special update as of June 29, 2009: On Wednesday, June 24, 2009 Governor Christ signed SB 278 which relates to Charter Schools. This law requires applicants to participate in applicant training provided by the Department of Education prior to submitting an application. The Department of Education is hosting three new applicant trainings throughout the state next month to facilitate compliance with the requirement for the current application cycle. Listed below is the information related to this training:
July 8 -- Tallahassee
July 21 -- North Miami Beach
July 23 – Orlando
The training will be conducted from approximately 8:00am – 5:00pm and will consist of six sessions that cover the following topics: charter school laws and the application process, charter school sponsors and oversight, business planning, fiscal management, accounting procedures, and available funding and financial assistance.

Once registered, a confirmation e-mail with directions to the training site will be sent to the e-mail address provided. More information about the DOE's applicant training is available on the School Choice Web site.
STEP ONE: Submit Letter of Intent to submit a Charter School application on or before July 1, 2009, by 5:00 p.m.
STEP TWO: Completely fill-out the Charter School Application as thoroughly and clearly as possible. Make sure you answer each question in the sequence in which it appears. As you respond to each item on the application, consider with care the information requested; compose your thoughts judiciously; and frame your responses with clarity, specificity, and pertinent detail.
STEP THREE: Submit the completed application by 5:00 p.m. to, Jody Perry, Director, Charter Schools Support. The address is:

- Three copies of your completed application
- One copy of your completed application in pdf format on a CD-Rom
STEP FOUR: The Superintendent’s Charter School Review Committee will receive, review, and evaluate all applications for a charter school. The Application Evaluation Instrument used by the Committee to reach consensus is included with the application information.
STEP FIVE: The application and the Review Committee’s recommendation will be placed upon an Agenda for The School Board’s consideration. The School Board must, by a majority vote, approve or deny an application no later than 60 days after the application is received.
STEP SIX: If an application is denied, The School Board, within 10 calendar days, will articulate in writing the specific reasons, based upon good cause, for its denial of the charter application.
STEP SEVEN: Upon approval of a charter application, the terms and conditions for the operation of a charter school shall be formed in a written contractual agreement. The applicant and The School Board shall have 75 days in which to mutually agree to the provisions of the contract.
