September 11th, 2001.
Just the name evokes images of pain, suffering and the tremendous
coming together Americans experienced in the wake of the tragedies
in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania.
As a way to honor those who lost their lives because of the terrorist
attack, the engineering students at Western High School designed
and built a memorial. The memorial (depicted in the design above) contains
a 28-foot wide Pentagon, surrounding two, 10-foot high "towers" which
symbolize the targets of 9/11.
Like the rest of the nation, the 16 students searched for a way to
come to grips with their grief, sorrow and anger that resulted from
the events of September 11th. They knew they had to do something not
only to honor those heroes who lost their lives, but as a way for them
to begin their own healing process.
