More than 700 urban educators, deans of colleges and other national
educational leaders descended on Broward County as part of the Council
of the Great City Schools' 46th Annual Fall Conference.
The conference was held from
Wednesday, October 16 through
Sunday,
October 20 at the in Fort Lauderdale. It was hosted by Broward
County Public Schools and brought together educators from the nation's
largest urban school districts to discuss best practices and share
information on how to improve student achievement and District effectiveness.
Guest speakers who attended the conference included:
- Andrew Young, former congressmen, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
and mayor of Atlanta, Ga.
- Ray Suarez, former host of National Public Radio's "Talk of
the Nation," now with public television's "The NewsHour with
Jim Lehrer";
- and Judge Glenda Hatchett, nationally syndicated television series "Judge
Hatchet," former Fulton County, Ga. Juvenile Court judge and Georgia's
first African-American chief presiding justice of a state.
The Council of the Great City Schools is a coalition of nearly 60 of
the nation's largest urban public school systems. Founded in 1956 and
incorporated in 1961, the Council is located in Washington D.C., where
it works to promote urban education through legislation, research,
media relations, instruction, management, technology and other special
projects designed to quality of urban education.
