For the second year in a row, Stacy Kruzel from Cooper City High was named South Florida Sun-Sentinel Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. Kruzel has an impressive resume back to back county, district and region titles. Stacy placed fifth among an impressive girls field at the 2003 4A state cross-country meet. Stacy entered the 2004 track and field season with a lot of confidence and experience.

The inaugural event for the 2004 Track and Field season is the Gulfstream Mile Run. Douglas Donn, Gulfstream Park Chairman, created the Gulfstream Mile Run seven years ago. Mr. Donn wanted to create an event that recognized the top student milers in South Florida. Each year the Gulfstream Mile is conducted in conjunction with the prestigious Fountain of Youth Stakes, featuring the top three-year-old horses in the nation. The Gulfstream Mile Run and Fountain of Youth Stakes race is a celebration of speed and youth.

The VII Annual Gulfstream Mile Run kicked off with pre-lims on Tuesday, February 10, 2004. Stacy Kruzel, the Sun-Sentinel’s 2003 and 2004 Cross-Country Runner of the Year winner, outsprinted Jesse Popova of Coral Springs down the straightaway to post the third fastest time in the girls heats. More than 600 athletes from Broward, Dade and Palm Beach competed including 77 boys and 102 girls from Broward.

Stacy returned to Gulfstream Park on Saturday, February 14th to compete in the finals. Last year Stacy ran a spirited race and finished second in the Mile Run. Kruzel showed gut and determination finishing third in the seventh annual run. Stacy was the highest Broward girls or boys finisher in the Gulfstream Mile Run.

Previous Broward winners in the Gulfstream Mile Run include last year’s winner Paul Cross, South Plantation High, and Angela Pichardo who graduated with two first place and one second place finishes.

The Gulfstream Mile Run raises approximately $50,000 annually for South Florida High School sports. Our thanks to Doug Donn and Gulfstream Park for showcasing and supporting our student athletes.
