Broward Hospital District Presents
BCAA GAME OF THE WEEK
Piper 33 Boyd Anderson 27
|
It was a wild and wacky game, complete with a man-made rain delay…well,
sort of. During the Piper High, Boyd Anderson High game, the sprinklers
came on in the second quarter delaying the game for 20 minutes.
The sprinklers were just the beginning – Piper converted four,
fourth down plays and Boyd Anderson had a touchdown called back due
to a referee’s inadvertent whistle. Crazy game, but what would
you expect on Halloween night?
The Bengals had a comfortable 27-14 lead leading into the fourth
quarter. Then like a witch's spell, the Cobras sprung to life by
an energized defense. Cobra safety Sam Seraphin intercepted a Sean
Allen pass and returned it 42 yards to tie the game at 27-27. With
less than six minutes to play, the Bengals began their winning drive.
The critical play was a fourth and four conversion at midfield by
running back Ronnie Thomas. With less than two minutes in the game,
Thomas steamrolled over two Cobra defenders for a 33-yard touchdown
run. The touchdown capped an impressive night of running by Thomas,
114 yards on 20 carries.
The crafty Head Coach for the Bengals, Don Gatewood, realized that
a 33-27 lead with less than 1:20 in the game was not safe. Gatewood
called for an onside kick. The kick was executed beautifully as Piper
defensive back Jack Roberts recovered the onside kick. The kick took
the Cobras completely by surprise. In fact, when was the last time
you saw the team ahead with less than 2:00 minutes in the game kick
an onside kick? Never! But then again it was Halloween night. After
recovering the onside kick, Piper ran out the clock.
Bengal safety Jack Roberts had an excellent game, returning a 35-yard
punt for a touchdown, another punt return for 50 yards and recovering
the critical onside kick. In a losing cause, Cobra quarterback Herbert
Bynes was simply outstanding. Bynes ran for one touchdown and threw
for two more, including a 92-yard pass play and completed 15 for
26 with no interceptions for 233 yards.
