Once upon a time, J.P. Taravella High was everybody’s homecoming queen…until Perry Schneider showed up on the scene. There’s a new attitude at Taravella, an attitude of winning, playing hard and competitiveness. Last year, coach Schneider, in his first year as Trojan Head Coach, led Taravella to their third playoff appearance in school history. The Sun-Sentinel recognized Schneider as the best coach in 2003. Trojan football is back.

The Trojans, behind the kicking of Zach Nelson, pulled out a hard fought game over archrival Coral Springs High. Zach sealed the Trojan victory with a 45-yard field goal with 5:20 left.

The Coral Springs vs. Taravella game is nicknamed the Mayor’s Cup – The Battle of Coral Springs.

The Trojans were led by quarterback Ken Latessa, who threw for 162 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Anthony Heard

Taravella trailed the Coral Springs High Colts 16-9 entering the fourth quarter. The Trojans pulled within two after a one-yard run by Heard. The Colts fumbled on the next possession and Trojan defensive player Vin Nobi recovered the fumble at the Colt 32. Seven plays later, Nelson kicked the winning field goal.

The win was very satisfying to the Trojan team. The previous week the Trojans lost a tough game to Blanche Ely 27-14. The Trojans now come to play at every game. Who says coaching doesn’t make a difference?
