North
Broward Hospital District Presents
BCAA GAME OF THE WEEK
Blanche Ely 32 Deerfield Beach 14
|
The tension was in the air as the overflow crowd of more than 7,000
filled the stadium at Blanche Ely High School for a rivalry game,
which would mean bragging rights for the next year and a lead in
the District 7-6A race. The emotional and intensity level of the
players was evident prior to and during the opening kickoff, as big
hits could be heard throughout the stadium and Ely pinned Deerfield
deep in their own territory with a tackle at the 12-yard line.
It was obvious from the first series of the game that Ely’s
plan to contain one of the nation’s premier quarterbacks, Deerfield’s
Brent Schaffer. The Tigers would pressure the pocket and call tight
man coverage as Ely forced Schaffer to scramble on the first play
and throw an interception on the second. Schaffer’s arm and
running skills, which have draw comparisons to the NFL's Michael
Vick, were on display and proved useful as he completed a couple
of big passes and ran for a 3-yard touchdown. Deerfield Beach High
has the distinction of being the first team to score on Ely this
season with. The untested defense of the Ely Tigers proved it was
worthy as it chased and harassed Schaffer all night allowing him
to complete only 12 of 24 passes, throw three interceptions and forced
two Schaffer fumbles in the second half.
Ely’s offense, led by running back Norris Smith (the heir apparent
to Tyrone Moss, Broward County’s all-time leading rusher),
carried the load as the Tigers controlled the game and kept the Deerfield
offense on the sidelines. Smith scored four of the five Tiger touchdowns
and rushed for 98 yards.
The avenging of last year’s loss and the sealing of this year’s
32-14 victory was complete when Ely’s Justin Thurston recovered
a Schaffer fumble and raced 52 yards for the final score of the game
with 33 seconds remaining.
