BCPS & Greater Ft. Lauderdale Alliance Partner to
Promote Technology Industry, Education & Careers

Monday, October 17, 2016

The technology sector is big business in South Florida – and Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) and the county’s economic development organization, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance (Alliance), are teaming up to create an even brighter future for this industry and local students.

The Alliance, together with its counterpart economic development organizations in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, are showcasing technology companies throughout South Florida through a TechGateway initiative. This initiative includes a website,TechGateway.org, which highlights more than 2,000 local technology companies, as well as a map showcasing the location of these technology companies across our region.  Through a partnership with BCPS, poster-sized versions of the map are being distributed to all of the District’s middle and high schools. BCPS Career, Technical, Adult & Community Education facilitators are working to raise awareness at schools about the TechGateway initiative, posters and associated classroom activities.

In addition, BCPS middle and high school students are encouraged to participate in a TechGateway App Challenge, allowing them to use their computer science skills by designing, storyboarding and creating an app that incorporates the TechGateway map and initiative to increase awareness about technology companies doing business in South Florida.

“We’re working to build awareness of the strength of the technology industry throughout South Florida, so everyone will know that this is the place to Work in the Cloud, Live in the Sun. We’re very excited to work with Broward County Public Schools to place these maps in middle and high schools so students will know about the many tech companies and career options that are available for them here,” said David Coddington, Vice President of Business Development for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.

“Our students are growing up in a technology-driven world with new and evolving career opportunities. It’s vital that we ensure our students are aware of these in-demand, high-wage career fields and ensure they have the skills they need to pursue them,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “Our District is proud to be a national leader for increasing access to computer science in our schools.  This school year, we expect to positively impact more than 50,000 students with computer science offerings at all 236 of our schools, benefiting students from elementary through high school.  Our partnership with the Alliance allows us to promote the incredible career options available for our graduates right here in our region.”

BCPS students’ app challenge creations will be showcased on December 6, 2016, at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center, as part of National Computer Science Education Week, December 5-11, 2016.  More details on this exciting event are to follow.
