  1. Which grade levels will shift to the newly proposed campus? 
  2. Will there be two (2) principals at the K-8 School?

2015/16 SSOS Initiative Information

Our most recent SSOS Symposium Meeting was held on Monday, November 16th at 6:30 pm in the Boyd Anderson High School Auditorium.


Hallandale Elementary School


1. Which grade levels will shift to the newly proposed campus? 

OSPA:  An upcoming meeting is scheduled to occur in December between District staff and principals to discuss grade level configuration.

2. Will there be two (2) principals at the K-8 School? 

OSPA:  This is not determined as of yet (item for discussion).  Superintendent Runcie and Chief School Performance & Accountability Officer, Dr. Valerie Wanza, will be meeting to discuss principal options. 

3. Will there be a multi-track, year-round calendar or a traditional calendar at the Hallandale K-8? 

Talent Acquisition:  Should the School Board approve a proposal to change calendars, Talent Acquisition will work with impacted staff to assist with any employment concerns.  The Superintendent’s Calendar Committee will act on Board approved proposal(s).  

4. Gulfstream Middle is on a burgundy track and Hallandale Elementary is on a (5) track year round calendar.  What happens to the calendars if Hallandale Elementary and Gulfstream Middle merge into one school?  

Talent Acquisition:  Should the School Board approve a proposal to merge Hallandale Elementary and Gulfstream Middle, Talent Acquisition will work with impacted staff and assist with any employment concerns. 

5. How will staff be paid if Hallandale Elementary goes to a traditional calendar?  How will the District compensate the staff for this payroll discrepancy?  What savings options will be offer when the decision will not be made until March or April?  

Talent Acquisition:  Should the School Board approve a proposal to transition to a traditional calendar, Talent Acquisition will work with impacted staff to assist in placing the employees on the appropriate Employee Work Calendars.  Employees will be compensated in accordance with their assigned calendar.  

6. Would we expand the dual language program to all levels?  

Bilingual/ESOL:  Yes, the program continues to expand as the students currently in the program advance to the next grade level.

7. Will school based staff get to vote on calendars?  

Demographics:  No.  District staff is in the process of scheduling meetings with school-based staff where questions regarding calendars, schedules, and transition to a new school will be discussed.

Gulfstream Middle School


8. What will be the school start and end time for the new K-8?

Transportation:  It is anticipated t remaining at the current bell time of 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (as long instructional time remains at 6 hours).

9. Will there be money to fix the current gym at the Hallandale Adult Center site?  

Facilities: The gym is fully functional. There may be need for regular maintenance in regards to "house cleaning". The current FISH Inventory Report classified the condition of the gym and other P.E. areas as satisfactory. 

10. Will K-8School boundary be the same as Gulfstream Middle?

Hallandale Adult & Community Center


11. Would it be possible for staff to visit the H.D. Perry site prior to the move (on planning day)?  

OSPA:  Yes, it would be a possibility for staff to visit the facility prior to the move on a planning day if the timing works on the calendar.

12. Will the site be able to accommodate the commercial food program?  

Facilities: Yes. The existing equipment and instructional space of the program at Hallandale Adult and Community Center can be accommodated at the H.D. Perry site. 

13. When will the budget be available for the public to view?  

Portfolio Services:  The budget will be shared after the school design team and District staff have met to determine all associated costs and funding sources. It is anticipated that these meetings will begin in early December after the initial concepts have been shared with the entire District. 

14.  Where on H.D. Perry site will the Child Development Center be (hot water, playground, kitchen)?  

Facilities:  There will be a need to retrofit an area for the Child Development Center. Lead-time for Design and Construction will be necessary.  The exact location will be determined in collaboration with the appropriate Department(s).

15. Will technology, such as Promethean Boards, be moved to the H.D. Perry site?  Instructional

Technology:  All technology will move with the students to the new adult center at the H.D. Perry site.  Instructional Technology staff will work with school administration to evaluate technology requirements.  Instructional need and budget will determine the technology deployment. 

16. Will District support the move (3-day pay for teachers – while moving to new facility, furniture, no financial impact on school budget, financial assistance with marketing)?  

Budget and Portfolio Services:  The projected facility costs have been developed by the Facilities Department, including a breakdown of the costs and needs of the facility changes. Currently any associated costs will be shared with the School Board for input and next steps at the January 12, 2016 School Board Workshop on school boundaries. Work will be continued for the design of space utilization; current school based budgets as well as potential moving costs, which have yet to be determined. District staff anticipates the actual design meetings to begin early December after the District has had a chance to get out to all communities regarding the concepts for several schools. All associated costs will be determined and potential funding sources will be developed through input from the school design team as well as with input from District staff.

17. Besides size, why is Hallandale Adult moving to an under enrolled school?  

Demographics:  Hallandale Adult is proposed to be moved to the H.D. Perry facility because the Hallandale Adult facility will be used to create the new K-8.  The H.D. Perry facility offers ample parking, program space, and is in close proximity to a large portion of the enrolled students.

H.D. Perry Middle School


18. Can the middle school start/end times be negotiated?  

Transportation:  At this time, New Renaissance Middle and McNicol Middle will remain at the existing bell times.   If there is a specific time change request, the Transportation Department will then re-evaluate.

19. Will H.D. Perry Middle students have the opportunity to attend A.C. Perry K-8?

Demographics:  If an H.D. Perry Middle School student resides within the boundary of A.C. Perry K-8, they will have the opportunity to attend A.C. Perry K-8.

20. Could there be a program in place at H.D. Perry Middle to increase enrollment?  

Innovative/Magnet Programs:  H.D. Perry is an authorized Middle Years Program (MYP/IB) International Baccalaureate School. This program continues at Miramar High School leading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.  The IB Diploma Program provides students in the program the opportunity to graduate with an IB diploma that is recognized around the world.  In addition, students can earn college credits honored by universities and colleges throughout the USA.  

21. Will transportation be affected due to more buses transporting children to and from the school?  

Transportation:  Yes.  We anticipate adding three buses.

22. What is the school grade for H.D. Perry Middle?  

Student Assessment & Research:  The school grades, which can be found on www.browardschools.com,  are as follows:  2014-C, 2013-B, 2012-A

23. How are cafeteria/food working staff transferred if a proposal gets approved?

Food and Nutrition Services:  A scheduled meeting with Staff explaining the approved proposal would be held.   Each Staff member would be provided a map from home to the current school location and listing of vacant available positions.  Each employee has the opportunity to select a location option(s) with the transfer based on position and scheduled work hours.  An Administrative Reassignment Letter based on staffing is issued with specifics noted.  The Federation Representative would join me at the meeting.  

24. Would cafeteria/food working staff be placed in the regional area where they currently work?  

Food and Nutrition Services: Yes, as per our Federation Contract, a ten mile radius is allowed from the employee’s home to work location.  The reassignment of Staff will not be an issue as we continually have vacant positions in all areas of the District.

McNicol Middle School


25. Are classes going to be larger with this change (CSR)?  

Portfolio Services: Currently, there does not appear to be any potential negative impact on class size.  If the enrollment increases at New Renaissance Middle and/or McNicol Middle, funding for additional staff will follow the enrollment changes.  There is space at the schools to accommodate the creation of additional classes, which indicates that space will not be a challenge in meeting class size at either middle school.

26. Will support be provided for non-instructional staff (cafeteria staff)?  

Talent & Acquisition:  Talent Acquisition & Operations (Non Instructional) will work with all non-instructional staff to ensure the appropriate support is provided.

27.  Will serving time be affected for the staff and children (breakfast and lunch)?  

Food & Nutrition/OSPA:  Meal times are established by the school administration based on the beginning and end of the school day.  Food and Nutrition Services complies with the administration’s meal period requests, providing guidance as needed.

28. Will the school calendar be affected (year-round status)?  

Talent & Acquisition:  If a proposal is Board approved impacting a school calendar, the appropriate calendar revision will be facilitated by the Superintendent’s Calendar Committee for Board approval.

Martin Luther King Elementary School Montessori Magnet Program


29. What will the exact boundaries be if MLK becomes a magnet school?

Demographics: The boundary for the school will remain the same, however, the Montessori program will have a transportation area north of Interstate 595.

30. If a student is on a reassignment for MLK, will siblings be able to attend? 

Portfolio Services/Demographics:  Per School Board Policy 5004.1, siblings have a priority for available reassignments and magnet seats prior to the computerized random selection process.

31. If a student is currently at MLK will they be able to attend MLK if they move out of the boundary? 

Portfolio Services/Demographics: Per School Board Policy 5004.1, the student will be permitted to remain at MLK for the remainder of the school year as its enrollment is below 102% of its permanent capacity.  The student will need to complete a reassignment application to remain at MLK through fifth grade.

32. When does the application process start?  

Portfolio Services: A special application window for the Montessori program will open in the spring should the proposal be adopted by the School Board.
